Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek

The Great Bird of the Galaxy
The Great Bird of the Galaxy
There are different beliefs as to just what constitutes "canonical" Star Trek.  The message inherent in Rick Berman's version of Star Trek was very different from Gene Roddenberry's message. So what follows is a list of episodes and movies that Gene Roddenberry either hands-on produced, or believed to be in the "spirit" of Star Trek:
  • Star Trek: The Cage
  • Pure Trek. Produced by Gene.  Unaired.
  • Star Trek: The Original Series; seasons 1-2
  • Produced by Gene, who was not directly involved with season 3, although it did contain some of his ideas.
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series
  • Produced by Gene.
  • The Questor Tapes
  • The origin of Data and Doctor Soong; produced by Gene.
Anyone who tries to write Data and has not seen The Questor Tapes does not know what they are doing.
  • The God-Thing
  • Written by Gene; unpublished.
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • Produced by Gene.
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Novel
  • Written by Gene.
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
  • Approved by Gene; The only Harve Bennett Trek movie that he considered "representative" of Star Trek.
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation  Season 1

  • Season one is all Roddenberry and great for the purist; Seasons 2 and 3 are a sweet and sour mixture of Roddenberry and Berman, with the percentage of Roddenberry decreasing and that of Berman increasing as the episodes progress.  4-7 are all Berman.
Seasons 1-2 were produced by Gene.

The cut-off point is a bit flexible - "Encounter at Farpoint" and the rest of the first season is pure Roddenberry but as the show progressed, Gene was gradually less involved.

David Gerold left after episode 7 of Season one.

Veteran Star Trek producer Bob Justman (who had worked with Gene on the Original Series) left after the first 18 episodes of season one.

Gene's hands-on involvement diminished greatly after the first season and he all but stopped writing and rewriting by the end of the third season.

Rick Berman took over as executive producer with Season 3, but Gene still had some input.

Roddenberry passed away during season 5.
